Win lose of draw, it is clear that Kimbo Slice was exposed on May 31, 2008. He clearly does not have the ground game or even the standup that we've been led to believe.
In Kimbo's defence, in the post fight interview he admitted that he still has a lot to learn.
Kimbo won the fight, by ref stoppage, but I believe it was stopped one punch too early. Thompson was in similar trouble a couple of times in the first two rounds, but managed to gut through it and take Kimbo down.
I had James Thompson ahead on both of the first two rounds and at one point landed about 50 unanswered punches on the ground.
June 1st (tomorrow) is the big WEC fight between Jens Pulver and Uriah Faber, this site will post WEC results. Also, next week (June 7th) is UFC 85, UFC 85 results will also be posted here.
- Next UFC Event - UFC Fight Night on April 2nd, 2008
so much for the next big thing.
wonder if a couple of the seemingly premature stoppages was due to carrying the fight on network tv, maybe with the intention of less perceived violence?
He was exposed against Colossus but only as a novice MMA expert. It was hugely entertaining and exciting. I was stunned when Thompson had the standing guillotine early in the fight he almost had Kimbo off the ground, but the monster never lost conciousness. Even Thompson was shocked. His ability to absorb punishment and hang in with no oxygen made Kimbo look super human. I was also pretty impressed with the way he managed his ground game early on; when he became fatigued later though, his ground game was gone - that is the sign of inexperience.
BOTTOM LINE: I hope the best for Kimbo, and think he and his story are good for MMA. But that fight was given to him. When Thompson had his arms pinned, raining down elbows to the head - he was not protecting himself and the fight should have been stopped. I think his near loss scared the ref who no doubt saw value for his sport in Kimbo winning, and the next time Thompson got wobbly he stopped it for Kimbo. That said, if Kimbo can learn escapes and to expend his energy wisely he will be unbeatable. If anybody wants to say the beat this monster, it's gonna have to happen before he increases his skill just a little bit.
The fight. Had the ref not stepped in, and Kimbo landed another shot at that fools face, it would have been bad tv, cause he may have been hurt very badly. After the 4th punch in the face, after the ear exploded, colossus was out on his feet, his eyes had rolled back and his arms we dropping, he was a dead man standing. I think the ref was very wise to stop it there. Kimbo smelt blood and knew that was his only chance for the win, and he was going to go for it, you could see it and he even said in the post fight, its a good thing the ref stopped it, cause I was going for the ear again. Nuff said, it had to be stopped. The dude shouldn't have been in there with that ear to begin with, but that's another story.
Kimbo will train more, I'm not a fan of his or anything, I just like violence, and Kimbo, brings violence.
As for some middle weights claiming that they could beat Kimbo, I disagree. There may be a few elites, but the average middle weight simply won't be able to hurt or control a man that strong on the ground or standing up. We'd all like to believe that skill always trumps power, but there is a reason that MMA has gone to a weight system.
If Kimbo keeps fighting and getting better, fewer and fewer MMA guys are going to be sounding off that they can beat him.
Kimbo is one dimensional, move forward and punch is all he knows. His next opponent should be looking to kick him in the head and land knees as he bends over to walk in and throw.
As for the event itself all I can say is WOW what a joke. Many times I thought I was watching WWF the way the event was produced. Dancing girls and boring commentary from a black guy that was so PC he even called the one fighter a "Proud Hispanic American," wtf is that? He didn't call Gina a "proud Italian American," that needs to go he was aweful from the start. After an hour plus I saw more fighting between my dogs in the living room than on TV. If they ever expect most people to watch again they had better change things as this was Barnum and Bailey with only one ring not three. The only reason I would watch another Kimbo fight is if he has a real opponent so I can watch him get beat down.
Its a good thing, for his 3rd official fight, he wasn't in there against a heavy weight champ, he'd have tapped out for sure, but he did show promise, and any fool that is a middle weight that thinks they could "take on Kimbo" should shell out the 2000 bucks it'll cost and go fight him in his back yard some time. Me...I'd rather watch thank you.
I have been a K-1 fan for many years and get most of the fights sent over on DVD from Japan. I have also been following the career of Kimbo Slice, including the recorded street fights.
Does anyone have an opinion about how an experienced K-1 fighter might stack up against Kimbo or the better MMA fighters? The K-1 fighters come out of a number of different disciplines as well, so they tend to make even more use of kicks and knees. Any feedback would be appreciated.
no contest...........kimbo will slice them up;
