UFC 85 Predictions
UFC 85 is just over a week away (June 7th, 2008) and I think I'm ready to hand out my UFC 85 predictions, at least for the main card anyway.

Matt Hughes Vs. Thiago Alves
Surprisingly this is one of my hardest picks this time around. There is no doubt that Matt Hughes has faced the better competition in the past, but Alves has looked better in recent performances. The trump card here for Hughes is his wrestling, I don't think Alves has an answer for Hughes superior wrestling and takedowns, unless he can catch Hughes with a big knee on the shot. I'll take Hughes by GNP stoppage.
UFC 85 prediction : Matt Hughes
Michael Bisping Vs. Jason Day
Many in the know are picking Jason Day to upset Michael Bisping in this fight, but I believe that Bispings only two losses (well, officially one loss) were to guys with superior wrestling to Days and also much stronger (physically). In those two bouts (Hamill and Evans) Bisping did manage to survive and even put on a decent showing. Bisping will take this fight, but I hope this gets fight of the night.
UFC 85 prediction : Michael Bisping
Marcus Davis Vs. Mike Swick
One word, fireworks Davis can KO anyone with one well landed punch and Swick also likes to throw...however I think that Swick needs a decisive win and will pull out the Swick-o-tine for this match.
UFC 85 prediction : Mike Swick
Nate Marquardt Vs. Thales Leites
Another interesting matchup, but I just believe that Nate is a better fighter. I also believe that Nate is on his way back to a title shot.
UFC 85 prediction : Nate Marquardt
Fabricio Werdum Vs. Brandon Vera
Vera is too small to be heavyweight champion, Werdum is well suited for the job. This is the fight which exposes Vera's size disadvantage and makes him move to light heavy.
UFC 85 prediction : Fabricio Werdum

UFC 84 Predictions
UFC 84 is happening on May 24, 2008. I'll make my predictions short and sweet.
B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk
UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn takes on former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk. Sherk was stripped of the title for testing positive for steroids and B.J. Penn won the title with a victory over Joe Stevenson. Sherk is a very strong wrestler with excellent cardio. B.J. Penn is an excellent striker with an amazing BJJ ground game. I expect B.J. to overwhelm Sherk until he either gets the fight stopped on strikes or catches Sherk in a submission.
Prediction : B.J. Penn
Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva
Jardine is coming off of a win against Chuck Liddell and Silva is coming off of a loss to Chuck Liddell. Still, I thought that Wandy looked better in his loss than Jardine did in victory (it just wasn't the same Chuck that night). I'll take Wanderlei by TKO.
Prediction : Wanderlei Silva
Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz (UPDATED)
I was originally taking Tito Ortiz in this fight, but after some soul searching I realized that I wasn't taking Ortiz because I thought he was going to win, but because I wanted him to win. I've been watching Tito fight for a long time and wanted to see him recapture his glory. Don't get me wrong, I still consider Tito a top 10 or 15 guy, but Machida may very well be the future at 205 lbs. I think that Tito's injuries and out of the cage activities have finally caught up to him and Machida will finish him.
Prediction : Lyoto Machida
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura
There are no easy fights in the UFC, but I believe that Sokoudjou with his power and strong Judo background will be too much for Nakamura. Soko had first time jitters in his first UFC outing, but he says he's coming this time to play.
Prediction : Sokoudjou
Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic
Relijic has a 7-0 record, but I've never heard of him. For that reason alone I am picking Gouveia
Prediction : Wilson Gouveia
Thiago Silva Vs. Antonio Mendes
Thiago Silva is on the fast track to a title shot at 205 and I don't expect Antonio Medes to stand in his way.
Prediction : Thiago Silva

Quick and Dirty UFC 83 Predictions
Here are the official UFC Results Live UFC 83 Predictions...quick and dirty style.
Matt Serra vs St Pierre
I don't want to discount Matt Serra in this fight. He is stronger and faster than most think, his striking is quick and powerful. He has excellent ground control and maybe the best positional BJJ player at 170 lbs. He has all the tools to make life difficult for most guys at 170 lbs, but I really want to see Serra move down to 155 and take on BJ Penn.
St Pierre is probably the best all round fighter in MMA right now (sorry to all the Silva and Fedor lovers out there). His striking is clean and crisp with both hands and feet. He has outstanding takedown defense and great takedowns. When on the ground he has a good wrestling base (shown against Hughes, Trigg and Koscheck). He also has enough BJJ to be dangerous for most guys on the ground.
In theory, St Pierre should take this fight, but as Serra showed before anything can happen. I expect Georges St Pierre to win this fight, but not as easily as many are suggesting.
My predicted UFC 83 Result : Georges St Pierre by TKO or decision
Rich Franklin vs Travis Lutter
Two years ago I thought that Rich Franklin was the most dominant fighter in any division of the UFC. Since then Anderson Silva has beaten him twice. Can Travis Lutter do the same? I doubt it, while Lutter is the better BJJ guy I think that Franklin is more well rounded. I see Rich winning the standup in this fight similar to the David Loiseau fight and then finally getting a TKO ref stoppage in the second.
My predicted UFC 83 Result : Rich Franklin by ref stoppage.
Jason MacDonald vs Joe Doerksen
Quick and dirty, right? Jason MacDonald has a better record against better opposition and I see him finishing Doerksen even quicker than their first fight.
My predicted UFC 83 Result : Jason MacDonald
Kalib Starnes vs Nate Quarry
Kalib really impressed me in his fight against Chris Leben, but in the end he couldn't finish Leben on the ground. Quarry has an impressive record, but his only top 10 name is Rich Franklin and he lost that one badly.
UFC 83 Prediction : Kalib Starnes by decision.
Michael Bisping vs Charles McCarthy
The UFC has given Bisping a gift as a reward for moving down from the talent rich 205lb division to the 185lb division. He should dismantly McCarthy easily.
My predicted UFC 83 Result : Michael Bisping by KO
Mac Danzig vs Mark Bocek
Quick and dirty, Danzig by any way he feels like.
UFC 83 Prediction : Mac Danzig by anything he feels like.
Alan Belcher vs Jason Day
UFC 83 Prediction : Alan Belcher by ref stoppage.
Sam Stout vs Rich Clementi
Stout has great hands, but is no match on the ground for Clementi.
My predicted UFC 83 Result : Rich Clementi
Other predicted winners:
Hironaka
Morris
Ed Herman

UFC 82 Predictions
UFC 82 is being held on March 1st, 2008 in Columbus Ohio. I'd like to invite all of you back to this site on March 1st for my live UFC 82 results, don't forget to add your own comments too! Here are my official UFC 82 predictions:
Anderson Silva vs Dan Henderson
In yet another UFC vs Pride champion matchup, Pride champ Dan Henderson takes on UFC middelweight chmpion Anderson Silva. The breakdown for this fight is pretty simple, Henderson is a top class wrestler, incredibly strong with KO power in both hands and a really good chin. His key to winner this fight is to take Anderson Silva to the ground, keep him on his back and get the fight stopped.
Anderson Silva on the other hand needs to keep this fight standing, use his surgical striking and set up some big punches. Silva does not want to clinch in this fight (a la Rich Franklin) as Hendo is too strong and his Greco Roman background will be difficult to deal with in the clinch, even for Silva.
I'm picking Henderson to win this one, but I can see whoever imposes their gameplan taking it.
UFC 82 Prediction : Dan Henderson
Heath Herring vs Cheick Kongo
Are you ready for this? I think that Heath Herring will win this fight by submission. Yes, Kongo just took out Mirko Cro Cop and Herring in theory should be no match for the bigger, stronger, faster Kongo, but I have a feeling that Herring will take this match. Look for an early flying knee.
UFC 82 Prediction : Heath Herring
Yushin Okami vs. Evan Tanner
I hate picking against Evan Tanner, he is truly one of my all time favourites. However, Yushin Okami is just a better all round fighter.
UFC 82 Prediction : Yushin Okami
Jon Fitch vs. Chris Wilson
Fitch has faced the better competition and come out on top. I expect the same result this time.
UFC 82 Prediciton : Jon Fitch
David Bielkheden vs. Diego Sanchez
Sanchez is coming off two losses in a row. Expect to see the old Diego Sanchez back and winning this one in the first round. If Diego looses this one, he must drop weight or reconsider his fighting career.
UFC 82 Prediction : Diego Sanchez
Andrei Arlovski vs. Jake O’Brien
I can't believe that this fight is on the undercard. Although O'Brien looked good against Heath Herring I expect Andrei Arlovski to school him in this bout. Look for Arlovski to make a statement with a big KO. Look For O'Brien to try and take this fight to the ground.
UFC 82 Prediction : Andrei Arlovski
Luke Cummo vs. Luigi Fioravanti
A tough fight for me to pick, Cummo has really not been effective against top competition (he has losses against Jonathan Goulet, Joe Stevenson and Josh Koscheck, but he is riding a two fight winning streak. Fiorvanti on the other hand has a win over Dave Menne, but also lost to Leben and Fitch.
UFC 82 Prediction : Luigi Fioravanti ( no confidence in this pick)
Dustin Hazelett vs. Josh Koscheck
Kos, like Diego has something to prove in this fight. I still believe that Josh Koscheck is top 5 in the welterweight division and quite possibly fighting for a spot somewhere in the top 3 (along with Matt Hughes, GSP and Serra). I expect Kos to run right over Hazelett in this fight.
UFC 82 Prediction : Josh Koscheck
Chris Leben vs. Alessio Sakara
Sakara has some good wins over James Leee and Elvis Sinosic, but has lost to Houston Alexander and Drew McFedries. Leben has looked better and better since his losses to Anderson Silva and Jason MacDonald (even his loss to Kalib Starnes showed a much improved ground game).
UFC 82 Prediction : Chris Leben
That rounds out my predictions for UFC 82. Don't forget to visit back here for UFC 82 Results and UFC 83 Results.

UFC 81 Predictions
Here are the official UFC Results UFC 81 Predictions. For UFC 81 Results, come back here on fight night (February 2nd, 2008.
Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir
I have no idea who most people are picking in this one. I suspect that those who've watched a lot of WWE wrestling will pick Brock Lesnar and those who have studied, or are big fans of Jiu Jitsu will pick Frank Mir. I give a slight edge in the standup to Frank Mir, mostly due to his height advantage and the fact that he's been training MMA longer than Lesnar. The edge in wrestling obviously goes to Brock Lesnar due to his college wrestling background. In the submission department again the nod goes to Frank Mir.
My UFC 81 Prediction for this fight is Frank Mir by submission.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Tim Sylvia
Pride vs UFC? Striker vs Submission specialist? Champion vs Champion? Yes on all counts. Striking edge goes to Sylvia, but only for his outside game and ability to use his reach. Big Nog throws more combinations than Silvia does, but not with as much power. On the ground there should be little doubt that Big Nog is better. If Nogueira can get this to the ground then I think Tim Sylvia is in big trouble.
My prediction is a submission victory for Nogueira, but I can see Tim getting a boring 5 round decision victory if Big Nog is unable to take this one to the ground.
Jeremy Horn vs. Nate Marquardt
I'm a fan of Jeremy Horn, but this is the "what have you shown me lately" world if MMA. I have to take Nate Marquardt in this matchup.
Marvin Eastman vs. Terry Martin
Eastman always seems to be involved in good fights and since he's down to 185 I think that his power will really shine. I pick Marvin Eastman by KO.
Other fights on the card are:
Ricardo Almeida vs. Alan Belcher
Tyson Griffin vs. Gleison Tibau
Kyle Bradley vs. Chris Lytle
Tim Boetsch VS. David Heath
Rob Emerson vs. Keita Nakamura

UFC 80 Predictions
Here are my UFC 80 Predictions. UFC 80 Will be held in England on January 19th, 2007. Once you're done reading these, bookmark the site and come back on fight night (or the next day) for UFC 80 Results.
BJ Penn vs Joe Stevenson
I believe that Joe Stevenson is probably in the top 5 in the UFC lightweight division, I can even give him top 3, but I don't believe he's as good as BJ Penn. The UFC lightweight division rankings (according to me) goes like this:
1&2) BJ Penn and Sean Sherk
Joe Stevenson
Kenny Florian
Hermes Franca
Spencer Fisher
...
So, I'm picking BJ Penn. I believe he has better standup and better BJJ. If Stevenson hopes to win this fight then he'd better have better wrestling than BJ and be able to hold him down for 5 rounds.
UFC 80 Prediction : BJ Penn
Gabriel Gonzaga vs Fabricio Werdum
If you'd like my favourite to win this fight, it's easily Gabriel Gonzaga. His last two outings were spectacular, both in victory (over Mirko Cro Cop) and in defeat (against Randy Couture). Werdum is definitely not one of my favourite fighters, but is still a very solid heavyweight.
UFC 80 Prediction : Gabriel Gonzaga
Sam Stout vs Per Eklund
Sam Stout has been in bigger fights and has better striking with good takedown defense.
UFC 80 Prediction : Sam Stout
Kendall Grove vs Jorge Rivera
With Kendall having lost his last bout to Patrick Cote I expect a much more focused and better Kendall Grove to show up. I expect this one to end early.
UFC 80 Prediction : Kendall Grove
Alessio Sakara vs James Lee
In theory Sakara should make a good fight of this (he's fought the better competition so far), but Lee has the better record in big fights (and overall). I'm going to go against the grain and pick Lee in this match.
UFC 80 Prediction : James Lee
The rest of my UFC 80 Predictions will be posted soon...
Marcus Davis vs Jess Liaudin
Marcus Davis has a better record against better fighters and should be a no-brainer to win this fight. If there is something that Liaudin has in his favour it is home field advantage and he's fought at the last two UFC's in Europe.
UFC 80 Prediction : Marcus Davis
Jason Lambert vs Wilson Gouveia
Jason Lambert holds victories over tough competition like Terry Martin, Renato Sobral and Marvin Eastman. Wilson Gouveia does not have such an impressive resume, but is coming off a three fight win streak.
UFC 80 Prediction : Jason Lambert
Antoni Hardonk vs Colin Robinson
Antoni Hardonk is still looking to find his way in MMA. He has an outstanding standup game, but needs work elsewhere. That said, Colin Robinson might be just the ticket. He is also a good standup fighter posting most of his victories by TKO or KO. Although the record favours Robinson, the opposition favours Hardonk.
UFC 80 Prediction : Antoni Hardonk.
Paul Taylor vs Paul Kelly
Paul Kelly is undefeated and I'm picking him to keep his streak alive.
UFC 80 Prediction : Paul Kelly
That's it, my complete UFC 80 Predictions. Come back here for UFC 80 Results!
BJ Penn vs Joe Stevenson
