Jon Fitch on BJ Penn vs GSP
I just read Jon Fitch's week 4 on UFC.com and was a bit taken back by the following comment:
I like Jon Fitch, but comments like this are not going to make him any friends. Who exactly does he have a problem with here, is it GSP? Is it BJ Penn? Is it the "so called experts"?
I guess we'll all see on August 9th whether Jon Fitch should be mentioned in the same sentence as GSP and BJ Penn. I'm personally taking GSP in this fight and I'll give Fitch credit where credit is due, he's been pretty impressive as of late, but a split decision victory over Diego Sanchez is not the same as dominant victories over Karo, Hughes, Kos and Serra.
This is Fitch's first bout against a real top 5 guy at welterweight. Is he the real deal?
August 9th, return to this site to see what happened at UFC 87.
I’ve heard some talk over the last few weeks about BJ Penn moving up to 170 to fight GSP at the end of the year. Of course, they’ve forgotten that GSP has a fight with me first. But that just shows you where some people really are still in this sport and how they still have no idea what’s going on. There are a lot of so-called experts out there, but they know nothing about the sport. They’re spectators on the outside watching the sport through a telescope, and they think they’re on the inside and know everything, but they don’t. You can’t let that stuff bother you though. I think it’s funny and it’s just that little extra pleasure at the end of the day when you win and all those people are exposed.

UFC 87 Predictions

Here is the UFC 87 Fight Card - August 9, 2008
Main card
- Jon Fitch vs. Georges St. Pierre (Welterweight Title)
- Kenny Florian vs. Roger Huerta
- Brock Lesnar vs. Heath Herring
- Manny Gamburyan vs. Rob Emerson
- Jason MacDonald vs. Demian Maia
Preliminary card
- Cheick Kongo vs. Dan Evensen
- Chris Wilson vs. Steve Bruno
- Ben Saunders vs. Jared Rollins
- Luke Cummo vs. Tamdan McCrory
- Andre Gusmao vs. Razak Al-Hussan
Fitch vs GSP
I'd like to throw out a few comments and predictions as well, starting off with the main event title bout between Jon Fitch and Georges St Pierre. Let's face it, Jon Fitch is a beast. With wins over Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves he has proven that he deserves this title shot. In fact, over his last eight fights Fitch is 8-0 while GSP is 7-1. Most people will tell you that "MMA Math" is extremely inaccurate, but I do consider level of competition and dominantness (is that a word?) of wins to be important.
In my opinion Fitch has faced two top 10 welterweights (named above) and defeated one by2nd round TKO due to strikes and one by split decision. St Pierre has faced 5 top 10 guys and has one loss vs one close victory and the rest were decisive victories. Edge in competition faced and dominance goes to GSP.
Styles make fights and unfortunately for Fitch GSP has seen the wrestler brawler style a lot. Face it, Matt Hughes and Josh Koscheck are probably better wrestlers than Fitch (Kos for sure). Also, Serra and Penn have the edge in Jui Jitsu. The one thing that GSP hasn't faced is a truly accomplished striker (although I would say that Penn is pretty damn good in that area).
Look for a feeling out process followed by a resounding thud as Fitch's back his the canvas, GSP will then spend the rest of the first round making Fitch squirm. Round 2 will start and Fitch will have his opportunity to stun GSP on his feet, but will again find himself on his back, this time stopped by GSP
Prediction : GSP by 2nd round ref stoppage
Florian vs Huerta
I think the first two fights on this card are spectacular. I can't wait to see Huerta and Florian lock up. Kenny has a way of solving opponents and making them look bad. Huerta has that never say die attitue and his well roundedness (is that a word?) has kept him in many fights until he finds a way to win. Fight of the night candidate for sure, but I have to pick one and I've like Kenny Florian's work lately.
Prediction : Kenny Florian
Brock Lesnar vs. Heath Herring
Brock Lesnar showed us two things in his loss to Frank Mir. First is that he is for real and he is a beast. Second is that he needs some work on his BJJ defense. Heath Herring will give Lesnar a war, Herring is tough to submit (although I doubt that Brock will take that route). Herring is tough and I expect him to win this via submission.
Prediction: Heath Herring

UFC 88 Fight Card Taking Shape
UFC 88 will happen in Atlanta on September 6, 2008
MMA has seen a lot of changes in the past year, but there are a lot of familiar names on the UFC 88 fight card. Former champions are everywhere, starting with former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell taking on unbeaten contender Rashad Evans.
UFC 88 Fight Card
Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans
Rich Franklin vs. Matt Hamill
Dan Henderson vs. Rousimar Palhares
Karo Parisyan vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida
Roan Carneiro vs. Ryo Chonan
James Lee vs. Tim Boetsch
Thiago Tavares vs. Kurt Pellegrino
Matt Brown vs. Dong Hyun Kim
If Evans wins it'll be tough to deny him a title shot, it would be equally difficult to deny Liddell his shot if he wins.
Former middlewieght champion Rich Franklin is moving up to light heavyweight to take on Matt Hamill. Hamill is best known for his loss to Michael Bisping, a loss which many fans and experts believe that should have been handed out to Bisping instead.
Former Pride light heavyweight and middleweight champion Dan Henderson will take on relative newcomer Rousimar Palhares as Henderson attempts to wipe out two consecutive losses and make a name for himself at 185 lbs.
Perrenial contender Karo Parisyan is taking yet another non title fight at 170 lbs. Karo unfortunately has had some untimely losses in his career and hasn't had that title shot he so desperately wants.
All in all this is a good looking fight card to follow up August 9ths UFC 87.

UFC Light Heavyweight Future
Forrest Griffin just won the 205lb title and already there is no shortage of opinions on possible matchups in MMA's richest (both cash and talent) division. Here are some exciting possibilities.
Forrest vs Chuck
Forrest vs Wanerlei
Chuck vs Rampage 3
Rampage vs Wanderlei
I believe the winner of Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans will get a title shot. I also believe that the UFC (if they don't give Rampage an immediate title shot) will have Rampage vs Wanderlei 3, or even Rampage vs Shogun 2.
It's going to be a great year...oh yeah, what about Machida? I say that the UFC should put him up against Shogun and see how that goes.

UFC 86 Results
Rampage Jackson vs Forrest Griffin is happening tonight. Stay tuned for our full UFC 86 Results.
Marcus Aurelio (155) VS Tyson Griffin (155)
Tyson Griffin comes in to the ring to the Rocky theme...nice.
Round 1
The first minute they both circle and the crowd boos. Now Griffin has Aurelio on the ground with Aurelio looking for someting, but not landing. Aurelio moves to full guard, Griffin tries to pull out, but couldn't, Aurelio going for triangle, then arm bar, but nothing there. The result of the round they stood up and nothing much happened, except for a nice body shot by Griffin...on to round 2.
I'd give round 1 to Tyson Griffin, but not much.
Round 2
Aurelio has impressed me in round 2 with solid BJJ, but Griffin still dominated the stand up and stayed out of trouble.
Round 2 goes to Griffin, but again barely.
Round 3
Again, Griffin rules the standup, then takes Aurelio down. Aurelio looks good on the ground, but not good enough. I give this round to Tyson Griffin ... not close.
Overall I give this fight to Tyson Griffin 30-27...lets see how the judges have it.
Winner : Tyson Griffin
Chris Lytle (170) VS Josh Koscheck (170)
I don't believe it, I did the entire commentary for the Koscheck vs Lytle fight and the server threw it away. Anyway, basically a GNP clinic by Kos, opening big deep cuts on Lytle and Kos wins the fight.
Winner : Josh Koscheck
Gleison Tibau (156) VS Joe Stevenson (155)
Round 1
Nice first round by Tibau who held Stevenson in an oma-plata (sorry about the spelling) for 1/2 the round. In the end I give round 1 to Tibau.
Round 2
Despite early advantage by Tibau, Stevenson catches Tibau in a gillotine choke.
Winner : Joe Stevenson
For those keeping count, that's 3-3 on my predictions so far.
Ricardo Almeida (185) VS Patrick Cote (185)
Round 1
Almeida looked good with excellent BJJ and top control. Cote landed a couple of elbows from the bottom, but the rest of the round was all Cote. I give round 1 to Almeida.
Round 2
Cote looks much better in the first half of round 2, taking Almeida down (sort of) and dominating the standup. Almeida looks to be gassing in the second half of round 2. I give round 2 to Cote.
Round 3
A very close round, but I give it to Cote....however a late takedown by Almeida may turn it.
Overall I give this fight to Cote, but wouldn't be surprised with a split decision.
Forrest Griffin (205) VS Quinton Jackson (205)
Round 1
Griffin landed more, but Forrest did more damage, specifically with a big uppercut and then an impressive show of strength moving Forrest half way across the ring against the cage. A very hard round to call.
Round 2
Forrest hurt Rampage's knee and then got top position and dominated round 2. Round 2 definitely goes to Forrest.
Round 3
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson takes the 3rd round based on solid standup.
Round 4
Forrest gets cut early by a barrage of Rampage punches, then a takedown and Rampage gets top position. Forrest gets a triangle and Rampage picks him up and slams him just hard enough to release. They stand back up and Rampage gets the better. I give round 4 to Rampage.
Round 5
Round 5 was another extremely close round. Depending on how the judges score the first and fifth round this one is debatable. Given that I give 2 of the other 3 rounds to Rampage I give the fight on the whole to Rampage.
The judges give the decision to Forrest Griffin.
Winner : Forrest Griffin
Oh yeah, Melvin Guillard won his fight too.

Hermes Franca vs Frankie Edgar on July 19th card
The title just about says it all, lightweight contenders Hermes Franca and Frankie Edgar will do battle on July 19th. This raises the level of the UFC's offering that night significantly. Is this enough to de-rail Affliction? We'll have to wait and see.
UFC Fight Night 14 - July 19th
If July 19th sounds familiar, it's because it's the same night as Affliction is holding their first fight card. The UFC scores a big counter punch by putting on an Anderson Silva vs James Irvin main event. Also scheduled to be on the card is Jake O'Brien vs Cain Velasquez.
Also just announced is Brandon Vera vs Reese Andy. It looks like the UFC is trying to put a hurtin' on Affliction on July 19th.
