This is round 3 of May 31 EliteXC on CBS Kimbo Slice vs James Thompson

Win lose of draw, it is clear that Kimbo Slice was exposed on May 31, 2008. He clearly does not have the ground game or even the standup that we've been led to believe.

In Kimbo's defence, in the post fight interview he admitted that he still has a lot to learn.

Kimbo won the fight, by ref stoppage, but I believe it was stopped one punch too early. Thompson was in similar trouble a couple of times in the first two rounds, but managed to gut through it and take Kimbo down.

I had James Thompson ahead on both of the first two rounds and at one point landed about 50 unanswered punches on the ground.

June 1st (tomorrow) is the big WEC fight between Jens Pulver and Uriah Faber, this site will post WEC results. Also, next week (June 7th) is UFC 85, UFC 85 results will also be posted here.

Saturday night is EliteXC's first show on CBS. It will be shown on "free" TV, so I don't expect a pile of traffic with people looking for live updates, however I will still post the EliteXC Results.

After a fantastic two and a half rounds, Robbie Lawler pokes Smith in the eye (not on purpose) and the fight is stopped. Both fighters wanted to continue, but the Dr decided that Smith could not continue.
Robbie Lawler retains the EliteXC middleweight belt.

I don't normally do predictions for non UFC events, but this weekends EliteXC is a different animal. The popularity of Saturday nights show may very well decide the future of MMA on network television. Sure, the UFC has been doing events on Spike TV for years now, but everyone seems to put CBS in a different league.

Kimbo Slice vs James Thompson
Both of these fighters have power, but only one of them can take a punch. I've watched James Thompson get KO'd several times (Fedor's brother had a great one). Kimbo on the other hand takes a punch well, usually just making him angry. I predict a very quick KO ending to this fight.

Robbie Lawler vs Scott Smith
May new UFC fans won't remember "Ruthless Robbie" when he was tearing things up in the UFC. He is fast and hits hard, but had trouble in his last two UFC fights. Scott Smith is also a good puncher but IMHO is not in Lawlers league. This will be a war from start to finish, but I expect Robbie to eventually catch Smith.

Gina Carano vs Kaitlin Young
This one is too close to call. Gina missed making weight by a couple of pounds and I hear that Kaitlin is pretty tough.

Phil Baroni vs Joey Villasenor
I always pick Phil Baroni and am usually wrong, so in that spirit I am once again picking Phil Baroni to finally live up to his potential and finish Joey Villasenor by KO.

Anyone who has read about Kimbo Slice and Chuck Liddell having words with each other might think that this is about a potential matchup between the two...well it is, but not in the cage and not a war of words. This is about May 31st and the battle for MMA fans and network television.

On May 31st CBS will air MMA in primetime. This will come in the form of an EliteXC card featuring a main event matchup between Kimbo Slice and James Thompson. Today on UFC.com I noticed that Spike TV is having a "Chuck Liddell" night on May 31st. This is no coincidence. The UFC wants to keep fans from tuning in to the EliteXC show, keep the fans focused on their fighters and ignorant of other organizations.

To be honest, the Kimbo Slice vs James Thompson matchup is really not going to be much to watch. Thomson while a big guy has a questionable chin and limited standup while Slice has near pro boxing standup and a solid chin. Kimbo will KO Thompson in round 1.

So the qestion is this: Would you rather watch re-runs of classic Chuck Liddell fights or a live second rate matchup featuring one of MMA's possible future heavyweight stars?

Of course notable on this card is that American Gladiator star Gina Carano is fighting...not only is CBS the first major network to show a live MMA card, but they are going to be showing a female MMA fight. I'm liking this more already. Don't get me wrong, the last thing I want to see is a typical "chick fight", but Gina is very talented and I look forward to seeing what the girls are capable of in the ring. Let's just hope that the EliteXC announcers have matured since the last time I watched two women compete (oh yeah, the inappropriate comments were flying...so sad when these women train so hard...).

According to the California State Athletic Commision Phil Baroni tested positive for banned substances following his June 22 bout with Frank Shamrock. Baroni lost that contest by choke in second round.

Baroni is denying that he ingested the drugs (which were meant for animals) and his camp will appeal the findings.
