A dominant performance by WEC featherweight champion as he dominated both the standup and ground game with a five round shutout of Jens Pulver. One judge scored the fight 50-45 and the other two scored it 50-44 meaning that none of the judges gave a single round to Jens.

You've gotta give Jens Pulver full credit for toughness as he endured a couple of very dicey moments, but didn't go out.

Tonight is the big WEC show (June 1st, 2008) including the defining bout for the 145lb weight class. Uriah Faber vs Jens Pulver. Pulver was the first UFC lightweight champion, winning the belt in a hard fought match with Caol Uno, Faber is the current WEC 145lb champ. While both are outstanding wrestlers, Faber is the better of the two, but Pulver's big equalizer is the power in his punches, especially at 145lbs.

Antonio Banuelos vs Manny Tapia
Manny Tapia wins a majority decision. This after a scoring error had called this fight a majority draw.

Winner : Manny Tapia

Chase Beebe vs Miguel Torres
Chase Beebe's wrestling looked good, but Miguel Torres puts on a BJJ clinic on route to a submission victory. The end comes by choke, turning an anaconda choke into a rear naked choke.

Winner : Miguel Torres

Rob McCullough vs Jamie Varner
Jamie Varner ends up TKOing Rob McCullough, but the interesting part of this fight was about 1-2 minutes before the end when McCullough nailed Varner causing Varner's mouthpiece to be knocked out, Varner then called for a time out to replace his mouthpiece (didn't know you could do that)...Varner was clearly rocked at that point and the refs' decision to allow it may have very well affected the outcome of this fight. All in all a good fight, but I'd like to see a rematch.

Winner : Jamie Varner

Carlos Condit vs Carlo Prater
Carlos Condit wins the early striking, but no real damage, Prater then takes him to the ground with a nice Judo throw. On the ground Condit works for several submission attempts including a just missed guillotine and nowhere near triangle...in the end Carlos Condit catches Prater with another Guillotine and Prater taps.

Winner : Carlos Condit

For those of you in Canada (where we don't get the Versus network), you can get tonights WEC card on TSN. So, the fallout from this is that Faber and Filho have weaknesses but have championship heart (both were tested in their bouts). Jens Pulver was absolutely dominant in his 35 second victory. Expect Pulver vs Faber in the near future.

The next WEC event is being held on Wednesday December 12th. If you are in the US you can watch this on the Versus network, I am unsure of how to see this from Canada. If/when I figure it out I'll post it.

In the least surprising news of the week, former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver will move to the WEC and fight at featherweight. This is no surprise to anyone who watched Jens get beaten by BJ Penn. This is a good move for Jens, the WEC and the featherweight division in general. Jens first fight will be against Cub Swanson at WEC 30 on September 5th. I for one hope that Jens makes a run at the WEC featherweight title. That title is currently held by the highly regarded Urijah Faber.

Jens was finding it hard to compete with the new breed of super 155ers in the UFC. Guys who walk around at 175 lbs and cut to 155 to fight. Sean Sherk is the classic example of this.
