UFC 79 Predictions
UFC 79 is going to be one amazing night. With the long awaited Liddell vs Silva matchup and GSP vs Hughes 3 on the card, but wait...there's more. Sokoudjou makes his debut, against Machida no less! How about the return of Manny Gamburyan, a very promising lightweight fighter. Don't forget to return here for our UFC 79 Results Here's the UFC 79 fight card:
Main Card:
Undercard:
Now for my UFC 79 Predictions. I've been holding off on these quite simply because I am having trouble picking winners in a couple of the fights, but here are my UFC 79 predictions, for better or worse.
Matt Hughes vs Georges St Pierre
There isn't a tougher fight on the card to pick than Georges St Pierre vs Matt Hughes. In their last fight, Georges dominated the standup, stuffed takedowns and eventually knocked Matt Hughes to the mat with a big kick and followed up with good ground and pound to finish.
In their first matchup, Hughes won by armbar submission after what I thougth was a very even round.
I always try to get into the head of a fighter before a fight, will Hughes try to play off GSP's TKO loss to Serra and try to stand with Georges? I think that would be a big mistake. Will GSP try to play off his recent wrestling domination of Josh Koshcheck and try to put Matt Hughes on his back? That too would be a mistake in my opinion. So if both of these guys work to their strengths instead of the others' weakness, who wins? Can Hughes take GSP to his back and ground and pound a victory? Can GSP catch Hughes standing again? A tough fight to call and GSP has only had a month of training for this fight. In the end I have to go with GSP, I think he's the more well rounded fighter with more tools to win. GSP might survive a Hughes attack on the ground, but I don't think that Hughes can stand and trade with GSP and as they say every round starts standing...and there are 5 rounds. Look for a flying knee this time on a Hughes takedown attempt.
UFC 79 Prediction : Georges St Pierre
Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva
If picking a winner between Hughes and St Pierre was tough, then how hard is this fight to predict? I am glued to the screen any time either of these two guys fight, they are two of my favourites. If this fight was being held under Pride rules, in a ring (i.e. foot stomps, knees to a downed opponent, etc) then I would take Wanderlei Silva to win this fight. The UFC rules definitely favour Chuck Liddell's style, but Liddell still must find a way to win. Straight hard punches and a good sprawl are in Chuck's favour here, but he must...absolutely must land the first couple of big shots or he will get mauled just like Rampage did.
For Wanderlei, he just needs to do what he does best, punch hard, punch often, clinch, knee, win. I think that Chuck's best days may be behind him. He will be motivated for this fight like no other fight before, but there is only one Randy Couture, everyone ages and Chuck's time at the top may be over. Silva will look to follow Jardine's footprint (to some extent) and use leg kicks from the outside and if he can avoid the one big right hand from Chuck he should come out on top.
UFC 79 Prediction : Wanderlei Silva
Manny Gamburyan vs Nate Mohr
I'll take Manny in this fight based on level of competition in the past.
UFC 79 Prediction : Manny Gamburyan
Dean Lister vs Jordan Radev
I believe that Dean Lister has the better ground game and he will take it there and dominate.
UFC 79 Prediction : Dean Lister
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs Lyoto Machida
Initially I was going to give this one to Sokoudjou, then I remembered Houston Alexander. This fight reminds me a lot of Alexander's last fight (a loss) and for that I am giving it to Lyoto Machida. Expect me to change this prediction before fight time....
UFC 79 Prediction : Lyoto Machida
Rich Clementi vs Melvin Guillard
I hope that Melvin Guillard has put his troubles behind him. If he has, then he should have no trouble defeating Clementi.
UFC 79 Prediction : Melvin Guillard

Upcoming UFC Events
There are a number of UFC events on the horizon. Of course the one everybody is waiting for is UFC 79 where Matt Hughes will take on Georges St Pierre for the third time and for me it doesn't get any better than Wanderlei Silva stepping into the Octagon against Chuck Liddell.
There are a few good UFC events to watch in the upcoming two months:
UFC best of 2007 (December 4th on Spike)
Ultimate Fighter Finale (December 8th on Spike)
- Featuring Clay Guida vs Roger Huerta (and Ultimate Fighter finals)
UFC 79 (December 29th on PPV)
- Featuring Chuck Liddell vs Wanerlei Silva and Matt Hughes vs Georges St Pierre
UFC Fight Night (January 23rd on Spike)
UFC 80 (January 19th on ? (in England, possibly Spike?)
- Featuring BJ Penn vs Joe Stevenson
UFC 81 (February 2nd on PPV)
- Featuring Brock Lesnar vs Frank Mir
The best of 2007 is sure to be a hit with UFC fans and it will of course be free on Spike TV.
December 8th will showcase some of the best two fighters in the 155lb division. Clay Guida and Roger Huerta are two fighters who "bring it" every time they step into the cage. I don't care where this fight goes, it will be exciting.
What more can I say about the December 29th card. If you are going to order one UFC PPV this year, then order this card. The two co main event bouts will be spectacular and the card is stacked from end to end. What a nice late Christmas present from the UFC to the fans...if only it was free too.
On January 19th the UFC lightweight picture becomes a bit clearer as BJ Penn (one of my all time favorites) takes on Joe Stevenson. These are two submission masters, but I think the difference here may be experience...BJ Penn is good everywhere and he's made of rubber. I like Joe Stevenson, but I just don't see any position where he has an advantage over Penn.
On January 23rd, 2008 Corey Hill will once again step into the Octagon. If you watched the 155lb season of the Ultimate Fighter you will definitely remember hill. After all, how many 155lb fighters walk around at 6 feet 4 inches?
Despite his inexperience, Hill had good showings during the show with a victory over Rob Emerson and a loss to eventual winner Nate Diaz.
Hill brings a good amatuer wrestling background and (of course) a decisive reach advantage into every fight.
Gray Maynard will also be fighting on January 23d. Maynard had a good showing and was an early favorite to take the season.
On February 2nd we get to find out two things.
1) Is Frank Mir going to make another run at the UFC heavyweight title?
2) Is Brock Lesnar for real?
Of course, UFC Results will have the full event results here.

UFC Interim Welterweight Title Match December 29th
It looks like there will be a welterweight title match at UFC 79 after all. As you know Matt Serra is out with a back injury, but UFC.com announced that Georges St Pierre will fight Matt Hughes on the UFC 79 card for the interim welterweight title.
Hughes and St Pierre have fought twice, each winning once. Hughes defeated St Pierre by armbar submission and St Pierre returned the favour by TKO'ing hughes in their rematch belt.
The winner of this bout will face Matt Serra (once his back injury heals) to consolidate the belts. In my opinion, this is really the match that should have happened anyway. It's a good call by the UFC.

Matt Serra not fighting at UFC 79
Matt Serra injured his lower back (herniated disc) in a training session and won't be fighting on the UFC 79 card. Dana White has stated that GSP will still not fight until his title bout with the winner of the Serra vs Hughes fight.
This leaves the UFC welterweight division in a very stale state. Fans have been waiting a long time (too long) for Serra to defend his title. A title he won from Georges St Pierre in April 2007. Now, it looks like it will at least several more months before we see a title fight, and months after that until Georges St Pierre fights again.

One of the best UFC events of the year is still to come. Mixed martial arts enthusiasts (myself included) have wanted to see Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva for years, but that's not the only great bout on this card.

Main Card:
Matt Serra vs Matt Hughes (postponed due to Matt Serra injury)

Undercard:
Roan Carneiro vs Tony DeSouza
Doug Evans vs Mark Bocek
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs Lyoto Machida
Rich Clementi vs Melvin Guillard
Dean Lister vs Jordan Radev
Eddie Sanchez vs Soa Palalei
Manny Gamburyan vs Nate Mohr

Sokoudjou will debut at UFC 79 against Machida
Thierry Sokoudjou vs Lyoto Machida has been scheduled at UFC 79, this coming at the same tiem as the announcement that the UFC has finally signed "The African Assasin". Sokoudjou is a Judo specialist, but you'd never know it given that his two last fights have ended by KO. Sokoudjou won these two fights against little nog (Antonio Rogerio Nogueira) and against Ricardo Arona, putting Thiery Sokoudjou right up there in contender territory. The UFC 205lb division just keeps getting better and better!
UFC 79 is being held in Las Vegas on December 29th, 2007 and features a title match between Matt Serra and Matt Hughes.

Hendo at 185lbs for Dec 29th UFC 79?
There have been some minor rumblings that Dan Henderson may fight at UFC 79 in December...and at 185lbs. Who knows if it's true or not, there is nothing substantial to these rumors yet. Let's just wait and see if anything materializes. There is no rumored opponent either, but you'd almost have to assume that it would either be Okami or Franklin, although neither of those two would have much rest between their recent UFC 77 performances and a UFC 79 showing. I'm not sure who else would be worthy of Dan Henderson dropping the weight and taking a fight.

Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva is official
Dana White has finally announced that Chuck Liddell will fight Wanderlei Silva on December 29th at UFC 79. Of course many in the MMA community found this out when Direct TV slipped up with some early advertising for the fight.
Still, it's nice to hear that the fight I've been waiting so long to see is finally official. I'll be writing a breakdown of the keys to victory for each fighter soon, so check back for that.
Don't forget to return to UFC Results for UFC 78 Results on fight night in November. UFC 78 features
Rashad Evans vs Michael Bisping
While many fans aren't really that excited about this fight, remember that both fighters are undefeated and this might put one of them into title contention.
Houston Alexander vs Thiago Silva
Houston Alexander is on the fast track to the top of the UFC 205lb division. Another decisive showing in this fight and he will also be in title contention.

UFC 79 Ice Man vs Axe Murderer

One of the most anticipated fights in the short history of mixed martial arts is Chuck Liddell versus Wanderlei Silva. Since 2003 this on again, off again match up has teased fans of both the UFC and Pride fighting championships, but now it looks like the fight may be on again.
UFC 79 on December 29th, 2007 is the rumored date for the fight to take place. The venue is in Las Vegas and the anticipation could not be any higher. It's true that both Wanderlei and Chuck are coming off back to back losses, but when you look at those losses and the quality of opposition it's clear that both of these guys are still at the top of their game

Various UFC Tidbits
UFC 77 weigh ins will be shown live today on UFC.com I believe they start at 4:00pm.
UFC 79 Tickets become available to UFC Fight Club members on October 21st and to the general public on October 24th. A UFC Fight Club membership goes for $75 for one year and isn't a bad idea if you plan on attending events during the year (as you get the first pick of tickets, not to mention all the other special goodies that go with being a fight club member).
UFC 79 will feature the welterweight title bout between Matt Serra and Matt Hughes and it's been widely rumored (and half confirmed by the directtv mistake) to have Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva. For me personally, the Liddell vs Silva fight is the second most anticipated fight in my MMA watching career. It ranks just being Liddell vs Ortiz 1 at UFC 47 "It's On" which I attended live in Vegas.
Don't forget to come back here Saturday night and Sunday morning for the full UFC 77 Results

Our good friends over at directtv seem to have slipped up and have a promotional deal (for UFC 77, 78 and 79) and 79 mentions Chuck vs Wanderlei. Apparently this will be announced at UFC 77 on Saturday night.

UFC 79 - Hughes vs Serra
The UFC has finally made the December 29th UFC 79 date official and announced the main event fight of Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra.
Matt Hughes is the former UFC welterweight champion and one of the most accomplished welterweights ever, with victories over Georges St Pierre, BJ Penn and Royce Gracie, not to mention one of my all time favourites, Carlos Newton (to win the title).
Matt Serra is the current UFC welterweight champion and the ultimate fighter season 4 winner. Serra won the title by TKO'ing Georges St Pierre.
The winner of this fight gets to face Georges St Pierre, possibly in Montreal.
