Hermes Franca vs Frankie Edgar on July 19th card
The title just about says it all, lightweight contenders Hermes Franca and Frankie Edgar will do battle on July 19th. This raises the level of the UFC's offering that night significantly. Is this enough to de-rail Affliction? We'll have to wait and see.
UFC Fight Night 14 - July 19th
If July 19th sounds familiar, it's because it's the same night as Affliction is holding their first fight card. The UFC scores a big counter punch by putting on an Anderson Silva vs James Irvin main event. Also scheduled to be on the card is Jake O'Brien vs Cain Velasquez.
Also just announced is Brandon Vera vs Reese Andy. It looks like the UFC is trying to put a hurtin' on Affliction on July 19th.

UFC Fight Night 13 Results
James Irvin vs Houston Alexander
Kurt Pellegrino vs Nate Diaz
Tim Boetsch vs Matt Hamill
Thiago Alves vs Karo Parisyan
Anthony Johnson vs Tommy Speer
Gray Maynard vs Frankie Edgar
Joe Lauzon vs Kenny Florian
Non Televised Winners:
Clay Guida won over Samy Schaivo by ref stoppage in round 1.
Josh Neer won over Din Thomas by unanimous decision.
Marcus Aurelio won over Ryan Roberts by armbar submission( in just 16 seconds).
Manny Gamburyan defeated Jeff Cox by guillotine choke submission in round 1.
George Sotiropoulos defeated Roman Mitichyan by second round by ref stoppage.
That was a good night of free fights, don't forget to return to UFC Results for UFC 83 Results. UFC 83 is being held in Montreal Quebec, Canada on April 19th and features a welterweight title bout between Georges St Pierre and Matt Serra.
- 8 second TKO, Irvin landed a punch on Houston's chin, Houston dropped, Irvin missed, then connected and the ref stepped in.
Kurt Pellegrino vs Nate Diaz
- After getting beaten up in the 1st round, Nate Diaz sinks in a nice triangle in round 2.
Tim Boetsch vs Matt Hamill
- After a pretty even first round, with Hamill getting the better on the ground and Boetsch getting the better of the standup it looked like Boetsch was taking control. Boetsch came out strong in the second round, but eventually Hamill got hold of him and pinned him against the fence on the ground and scored a ref stoppage due to strikes.
Thiago Alves vs Karo Parisyan
- Karo dominated the first round, both on the ground and standing. In round 2, Alves caught Karo with a big knee and after Karo went down Thiago followed up with some big punches. Karo was very angry with the stoppage, but I think the ref called it right.
Anthony Johnson vs Tommy Speer
- This one wasn't even close as Anthony Johnson looked very good dominating the standup and stuffing takedown attempts on route to a spectacular 1st round KO of Tommy Speer
Gray Maynard vs Frankie Edgar
- A close three round battle which was highlighted by Gray Maynard taking Frankie Edgar down again and again. Unfortunately Maynard was not really able to mount much of an offense once getting Edgar grounded, but I believe that the takedowns and ground control were enough to win him the fight. The judges agree 30-27
Joe Lauzon vs Kenny Florian
- First round had some nice back and forth action highlighted by Lauzon taking Florian down a couple of times. After the first takedown, Florian landed some elbows from the bottom and a couple of them struct the back of Lauzon's head. Second round Florian takes Lauzon down and gets full mount, from there Lauzon was in real trouble with Florian landing blows until the ref stopped the fight

Clay Guida won over Samy Schaivo by ref stoppage in round 1.
Josh Neer won over Din Thomas by unanimous decision.
Marcus Aurelio won over Ryan Roberts by armbar submission( in just 16 seconds).

The next UFC Fight Night is April 2nd from Colorado. You can watch it live on Spike TV (free of course). There is some debate as to whether Spike will show 2 hours or 3 hours of fights. Upcoming UFC Events
There are a number of UFC events on the horizon. Of course the one everybody is waiting for is UFC 79 where Matt Hughes will take on Georges St Pierre for the third time and for me it doesn't get any better than Wanderlei Silva stepping into the Octagon against Chuck Liddell.
There are a few good UFC events to watch in the upcoming two months:
UFC best of 2007 (December 4th on Spike)
Ultimate Fighter Finale (December 8th on Spike)
- Featuring Clay Guida vs Roger Huerta (and Ultimate Fighter finals)
UFC 79 (December 29th on PPV)
- Featuring Chuck Liddell vs Wanerlei Silva and Matt Hughes vs Georges St Pierre
UFC Fight Night (January 23rd on Spike)
UFC 80 (January 19th on ? (in England, possibly Spike?)
- Featuring BJ Penn vs Joe Stevenson
UFC 81 (February 2nd on PPV)
- Featuring Brock Lesnar vs Frank Mir
The best of 2007 is sure to be a hit with UFC fans and it will of course be free on Spike TV.
December 8th will showcase some of the best two fighters in the 155lb division. Clay Guida and Roger Huerta are two fighters who "bring it" every time they step into the cage. I don't care where this fight goes, it will be exciting.
What more can I say about the December 29th card. If you are going to order one UFC PPV this year, then order this card. The two co main event bouts will be spectacular and the card is stacked from end to end. What a nice late Christmas present from the UFC to the fans...if only it was free too.
On January 19th the UFC lightweight picture becomes a bit clearer as BJ Penn (one of my all time favorites) takes on Joe Stevenson. These are two submission masters, but I think the difference here may be experience...BJ Penn is good everywhere and he's made of rubber. I like Joe Stevenson, but I just don't see any position where he has an advantage over Penn.
On January 23rd, 2008 Corey Hill will once again step into the Octagon. If you watched the 155lb season of the Ultimate Fighter you will definitely remember hill. After all, how many 155lb fighters walk around at 6 feet 4 inches?
Despite his inexperience, Hill had good showings during the show with a victory over Rob Emerson and a loss to eventual winner Nate Diaz.
Hill brings a good amatuer wrestling background and (of course) a decisive reach advantage into every fight.
Gray Maynard will also be fighting on January 23d. Maynard had a good showing and was an early favorite to take the season.
On February 2nd we get to find out two things.
1) Is Frank Mir going to make another run at the UFC heavyweight title?
2) Is Brock Lesnar for real?
Of course, UFC Results will have the full event results here.

UFC Fight Night Predictions
The next UFC Fight Night is coming up on September 19th and for a UFC Fight Night card, it's pretty jam packed with talent. Here are my UFC Fight Night predictions.
Kenny Florian vs Din Thomas
Din Thomas is an excellent striker and is good on the ground. Kenny Florian is working his way back up to a title shot. It's a tough pick between these two and I'd put them right next to each other on my UFC lightweight fighter rankings. They've both fought tought guys, but Thomas has the advantage in that department having faced both BJ Penn and Matt Serra. That said, I have to give this one to Kenny Florian.
UFC Fight Night Prediction : Kenny Florian
Chris Leben vs Terry Martin
What can you say about Chris Leben that hasn't been said before. He's tough, he has a hard head and bricks in his hands. Unfortunately his ground game hasn't kept up with his stand up. I was impressed with Leben's last fight against Kalib Starnes. The judges had him losing that fight, but I thought he won.
Terry Martin is big and strong. He's getting better with every fight and his fight against the very well respected Ivan Salaverry showed that he can avoid takedowns and he has great hands. I think Martin is too big and strong for Leben.
UFC Fight Night Prediction : Terry Martin
Leonard Garcia vs Cole Miller
We've seen Cole Miller do very well in the Ultimate Fighter TV series and his only loss came to Nate Diaz after he got hit on the back of the head and was dazed. Garcia is tough as nails and good on the ground. This should be an excellent fight and I expect it to go all three rounds.
UFC Fight Night Prediction : Leonard Garica
Kuniyoshi Hironaka vs Thiago Alves
Hironaka has a win over Nick Diaz and a loss to Jon Fitch. Thiago Alves has also lost to Jon Fitch, but has recent impressive wins over John Alessio and Tony DeSouza. I have to take Alves in this one.
UFC 76 Prediction : Thiago Alves
Kenny Florian vs Din Thomas
