UFC 85 Predictions
UFC 85 is just over a week away (June 7th, 2008) and I think I'm ready to hand out my UFC 85 predictions, at least for the main card anyway.

Matt Hughes Vs. Thiago Alves
Surprisingly this is one of my hardest picks this time around. There is no doubt that Matt Hughes has faced the better competition in the past, but Alves has looked better in recent performances. The trump card here for Hughes is his wrestling, I don't think Alves has an answer for Hughes superior wrestling and takedowns, unless he can catch Hughes with a big knee on the shot. I'll take Hughes by GNP stoppage.
UFC 85 prediction : Matt Hughes
Michael Bisping Vs. Jason Day
Many in the know are picking Jason Day to upset Michael Bisping in this fight, but I believe that Bispings only two losses (well, officially one loss) were to guys with superior wrestling to Days and also much stronger (physically). In those two bouts (Hamill and Evans) Bisping did manage to survive and even put on a decent showing. Bisping will take this fight, but I hope this gets fight of the night.
UFC 85 prediction : Michael Bisping
Marcus Davis Vs. Mike Swick
One word, fireworks Davis can KO anyone with one well landed punch and Swick also likes to throw...however I think that Swick needs a decisive win and will pull out the Swick-o-tine for this match.
UFC 85 prediction : Mike Swick
Nate Marquardt Vs. Thales Leites
Another interesting matchup, but I just believe that Nate is a better fighter. I also believe that Nate is on his way back to a title shot.
UFC 85 prediction : Nate Marquardt
Fabricio Werdum Vs. Brandon Vera
Vera is too small to be heavyweight champion, Werdum is well suited for the job. This is the fight which exposes Vera's size disadvantage and makes him move to light heavy.
UFC 85 prediction : Fabricio Werdum

UFC Improves UFC 85 Fight Card
They've announced two additional bouts which I don't truly consider main event on their own, but in tandem and along with Rashad vs James make a nice triple bill.
Matt Hughes vs Thiago Alves certainly isn't one that I expected. I thought for sure that the UFC would wait to put Hughes up against Matt Serra, but this bout is one of the reasons that I love the UFC so much. Alves is an up and comer and Hughes is coming off a big loss to GSP. Both of these guys are still extremely marketable (with Hughes vs Serra being a huge draw), kudos to the UFC for putting this one together.
Chris Leben vs Michael Bisping is also another one that I didn't see coming. A ton of fans on blogs have been asking for this bout but to be honest I didn't think it would happen. Finally Bisping and Leben are fighting strikers, this could be a knock down drag out war. Consider the winner of this bout in the short line for a title shot at 185.

UFC 85 Main Event
If you haven't heard, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua has dropped out of his UFC 85 match against Chuck Liddell. Shogun has reinjured his knee, but promises that he'll be back better than ever. In the meantime, Rashad Evans has stepped up and accepted the UFC 85 bout. What is he thinking?
I see Rashad vs Chuck going much like the Tito vs Chuck matchups and given the draw between Ortiz and Evans I think it's justified. Sure Rashad was able to KO Sean Salmon with a high kick to the head, but Salmon does not posess anything like Liddell's standup. Also, Evans was not able to finish Ortiz on their feet and did not dominate on the ground. Chuck does well against fighters who can wrestle (due to his outstanding takedown defense) and I predict a dominant Liddell performance, maybe even a first round KO.
